Great things can indeed come from small beginnings.
Take it from Myrna Padilla – a former domestic helper who worked in Hongkong, Singapore, and Taiwan for 20 years. These days, however, she is known as the founder and CEO of “one of the most successful business process outsourcing companies in the world,” as described by an Inquirer article.
Mynd Consulting, a social network management software provider based in Davao, is the go-to resource for many clients in Europe and the United States in need for web design and development services. The firm is currently working with the healthcare sector in the US to create a series of mobile apps.
The tech business also offers social media management systems for clients wanting to monitor multiple social media accounts. On top of that, they’ve also developed the OFW Watch Android Mobile Applications service for OFWs.
According to Myrna, she created OFW Watch to help the “brothers and sisters” that she “left behind.” The service now has over 100,000 overseas worker volunteers ready to lend assistance for OFWs in trouble.
During the years she worked as a domestic helper, Myrna said she has heard numerous horror stories about OFWs being abused by their employers. In 1999, she established the Mindanao Hongkong Workers Federation and became its chair for 8 years.
Later on, she was able to learn using the computer with the help of Jonathan, her 8-yar-old ward.
“At that time, I knew nothing about technology, but I did have thirst for knowledge. I studied everything I could find on the subject. I soon began applying technology to the operations of the federation,” Myrna recalled.
When she came back to the country for good, her goal has to tap the power of technology and create jobs so “others will not have to feel the anguish of being separated from their families.”
