The government doubled the Christmas incentive for public school teachers.
Teaching is a noble profession. But whether it is acceptable or not, the reality remains – it is one of the lowest paying jobs. Even in some developing countries, like the Philippines, the salary of teachers cannot even sustain a decent status of life of a family. Especially in private institutions, teachers are under paid. That is why in the government sector, officials see to it that educators will be properly compensated in all means. Giving out performance-based bonuses is one way of the administration providing and incentivising the teachers for them not to leave their ranks.
It will truly be a very happy Yuletide season for all 720, 000 public school teachers in the Philippines. As we celebrate Christmas, the lecturers from the Department of Education will receive their annual bonus ranging from P34, 000 to P64, 000. This is actually times two of what they received last year as per Teacher’s Dignity Coalition (TDC). The TDC Chairman Benjo Basas said that the incentive will be composed of their performance-based bonus (PBB), year-end bonus, cash gift and productivity enhancement incentive (PEI). For example, a teacher with a basic salary of P19, 077 will be entitled with a minimum of P5000 PBB, year-end bonus of P19, 077, cash gift of P5000 and P5000 PEI. However, there will be a ceiling amount of P64, 077 for those who will be receiving the maximum PBB amount of P35, 000. The PBB and year-end bonus will be given this December. Compared to the previous year, those who are in Teacher 1 position received P16, 774 as bonus and a certain population was granted a ceiling amount of P46, 744.
