One of the biggest drawbacks of being an Overseas Filipino Worker is that you’ll be miles away from your loved ones. Despite being placed in such a difficult situation, many OFWs try to endure the hardships so they can provide better for their families.
Establishing strong family ties while you’re abroad is another hurdle that you have to overcome. If done right, it is still possible to maintain a solid relationship with your spouse and children even if you’re far away from home.
Listed below are some specific things you can do to strengthen family bonds:
1. Use modern technology.
Social media, for example, can be a good tool to stay in touch with your family. Take full advantage of the internet so you can chat and do video calls with them. It would even be ideal if you can set a regular time to contact each other just to get updated with everyone’s activities. Assure them of your love often.

2. Don’t miss out on important milestones and special occasions.
Whenever possible, try to come home to celebrate milestones (such as graduations) and special occasions (birthdays). That, of course, will not always be easy since airfare can be extremely pricey plus taking a leave from your employment may take a lot of work.
Again, the key here is to stay in touch. Greet them on the said occasion or achievement and explain its significance. If they’re graduating, talk with them about the importance of pursuing education and ask them about their future plans. Share your insights but be supportive about their decisions.
3. Value holidays.
Holidays are very important for Filipino families so if you really can’t make it home on, say, Christmas, do your best to make up for it. Send a balikbayan box if your budget allows you and make sure that there’s something for everybody. Your loved ones will definitely appreciate your thoughtfulness.
