Being a parent is hard but, as anyone can imagine, being a single parent can be much harder. Such a situation can be very challenging and so some single parents choose to look for a companion in life.
Introducing a new partner to the children, however, can be a very complicated matter. If you are in a similar situation, there are things you have to consider before taking the step to introduce your partner to your kids.
Here are some useful reminders:
- Consider your children’s feelings and wait for the right time.
When introducing your partner, take time to consider the feelings of your children. Most of the time, younger kids are more accepting while older children tend to be very hesitant about the idea of seeing their parent be with a different man or woman.
Also, make sure to do the introductions only when you are already confident about your new relationship. It would send bad signals if you will introduce someone who’ll only leave you in just a few weeks or months.

- Build a relationship of trust.
Upon the first few meetings, expect your children to have mixed feelings and reactions about seeing you with a new partner. They’ll probably feel threatened by his or her presence. Also, they’d probably feel you betrayed them by replacing their mom or dad.
Talk with your partner and make it a commitment to be tolerant and understanding for your children. This is not an easy stage for them so don’t expect everything to run smooth. Try building a relationship of trust with them but don’t force it. Remember that trust takes time.
- Talk with your kids.
Communication is key that’s why you should likewise sit down with your kids and talk with them often. Take time to listen and try to understand how they feel about the situation. Be honest with your kids and share your true thoughts and feelings with them as well. Remind them of your love to them. Express and show it often even if you already have a new partner. Assure them that your partner will not try to replace the other parent.
With the right timing and with a lot of honesty, introducing a new partner can be possible. Keep in mind that you want to maintain quality relationship with both your partner and children.
