Let’s face it: Maintaining a long-distance relationship can be quite challenging for most couples. This, of course, is one of the difficulties sacrifices that a married OFW has to make in order to provide for his or her family. Although many couples manage to survive this difficult scenario, it is likewise a fact that some relationships perish with the absence of a partner. As a result, we hear sad stories about failed marriages and broken families.
In a recent article published by SmartParenting, Dr. Angelo O. Subida, a clinical psychotherapist, said modern technology should be utilized to strengthen a couple’s relationship.
Dr. Subida said:
“Even with technology aiding communication, the physical distance can remain a problem. A challenge then is to find creative ways and means to build emotional and mental intimacy via technology.”
Here are 5 signs you should keep your eye on if your spouse is working abroad:
1. Lack of regular communication.
First and foremost, having regular communication is essential. Take regular time to communicate with each other via free online tools such as Skype calls or Facebook chats. Grab the opportunity to make each other feel important. “You can do this through validation, love expressions, getting in touch with your feelings, and soothing your partner,” said Dr. Subida.
2. Frequent disagreements.
Although fights are normal for couples, watch out that such things do not become too frequent. Make it a commitment to resolve disagreements immediately. Try to understand each other’s point. “Trust your partner and acknowledge your partner’s viewpoint before expressing your own, “ Dr. Subida remarked. “Pick your battles carefully and don’t sweat the small stuff. Moderate your emotions.”
3. Flirting with the opposite sex.
No matter how others try to justify it as a harmless act, flirting with the opposite sex (whether in person or online) is a bad thing. It can lead to infidelity problems.
When speaking with your spouse, admit your feelings of loneliness. Turn to him or her whenever you are experiencing problems – not to someone else.
4. Financial infidelity.
Be honest with each other regarding finances. Lying can lead to lack of trust. Also, plan together so you can avoid overspending. Dr. Subida suggested “Have a mutually-agreed-upon financial plan. Be as specific and concrete as possible.”
5. Lack of unity in decision-making.
It is crucial for a husband and a wife to be united, especially when making big decisions. Remember that building walls, not bridges, will strengthen your marriage. “Tell your partner exactly what you want to do, express interest in your partner’s views and opinions, be direct and honest, and choose to be polite regardless of your partner’s words and actions,” Dr. Subida pointed out.
